The U.S. Coast Guard has launched its newest icebreaker, USCGC Storis (WAGB 21), marking the service’s first polar icebreaker acquisition in over 25 years. Acquired from Edison Chouest Offshore, the Storis features a hybrid military-civilian crew and Polar Class 3-equivalent certification. Its deployment enhances U.S. Arctic capabilities at a time of increased regional activity and supports the Coast Guard’s broader strategy to expand its polar icebreaker fleet and operational presence in the Arctic.
