MERCHANTS EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

 

The Merchants Exchange Scholarship Application period has closed for the year. Thank you to all of our applicants; we encourage those who did not make the application period this year to visit us again in early 2014.

 

 

The Merchants Exchange Scholarship Fund is designed to help college students seeking careers in Maritime Affairs/International Trade receive resources for their continued education. The scholarship is awarded to those who have demonstrated academic ability and possess qualities in personal character that exemplify their drive to obtain their education goals. Ultimately, it is our hope that by offering these scholarships, the recipients will utilize the opportunities to become more involved in the Maritime industry as they pursue their education and further their Maritime careers.

 

 

Scholarship Guidelines:
The number of awards and amount of funds distributed each year is determined by the Scholarship Committee.  The scholarship award averages $1,000 - $2,000, and may be used for tuition, fees, and books.  The scholarship may be renewable upon reapplication of the recipient and approval of the Scholarship Committee.

 

Selection Process – The recipients of the Merchants Exchange Scholarship will be selected in June and will be rewarded to outstanding individuals who meet the following criteria: 

 
  • The applicant’s chosen field of study must be in Maritime Affairs/International Trade.
  • The applicant must demonstrate academic achievement and have exemplary qualities in personal character.  Financial need may be considered if other factors are equal.
  • The applicant must have completed the minimum credit hours equivalent to (2) academic years and be of Junior or Senior status or Graduate Student at an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • The applicant must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Administrative Process – The Merchants Exchange requires the academic institution to administer the scholarship within the following guidelines:

 
  • The scholarship will be remitted to the institution by the Merchants Exchange Scholarship Fund by September 1st, and may be renewed annually upon approval.
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA, regular class attendance, and course completion standards must be maintained for the student to remain qualified. 
  • Carry-over funds from (1) year to the next is acceptable.
  • If scholarship is not fully utilized, the unused funds may be given in the form of a scholarshipto an alternate student based on the selection process outlined above.

Application – to apply for the Merchants Exchange Scholarship:

 
  • Click on the “Apply Online” button and complete the application in its entirety.
  • Please note that any blank spaces must be marked N/A.  
  • The form will be submitted electronically. 
  • In addition, one letter of recommendation and the applicant's sealed and certified academic transcripts are required and must be received before May 31, 2013. 
  • All recommendations must have the Merchants Exchange of Portland Scholarship Recommendation form attached.
